ACL Recovery Nutrition
You are what you eat! Eating healthy nutrient dense foods and drinking plenty of water before and after your surgery can hugely aide in your recovery. If you are unsure about the nutrients or caloric intake that your body needs consult with your doctor or nutritionist for expert guidance tailored to you and your surgery. Some surgeries require a special diet or dietary restrictions so make sure that you talk to your doctor.
In general drinking lots of water before and after most surgeries is going to be a great way to help your body recover and flush out the medicines and bad cells that it doesn’t need. After ACL surgery eating foods with anti-inflammatory fats can be beneficial in helps to reduce swelling and inflammation in your body occurring from the surgery. Try eating foods like olive oil, avocados, fish oil, flax oil or ground flax, fish like mackerel or salmon and sardines, mixed nuts and seeds, cocoa, tea, berries, and even inflammation spices and herbs like tumeric, garlic, and bromelain.
It’s important to make sure that your energy intake is a priority after ACL surgery. It is normal to want to eat less while you while be extra sedentary recovering but make sure that you are still getting enough calories and nutrients to allow your body to have enough energy to heal.
